Why Modern Marketing Is Becoming More Technical

Channel expertise still matters, but the leverage has moved to the plumbing: tracking, data models, APIs and the systems behind the dashboard.

· 1 min read · Updated

Ten years ago a strong digital marketer knew platforms. Today a strong digital marketer knows platforms and understands the systems those platforms sit inside.

That shift is not about becoming an engineer. It is about knowing enough to ask better questions of the people who are.

The best campaign in the world still loses to a broken measurement layer.

The work moved behind the interface

Ad platforms have automated most of the tactical decisions marketers used to make manually. Bidding, placement and creative rotation are now optimisation problems the machine solves faster than any person can.

What the machine cannot do is decide what to measure, how to define a conversion, or whether the signal being fed back is trustworthy. Those decisions are technical, and they now determine performance more than bid strategy does.

Measurement is an engineering problem

Consent modes, server-side tagging, attribution windows and identity fragmentation have turned measurement into a build, not a setting.

  • Tracking implementation decides what the platform can learn.
  • Data modelling decides what the business can compare.
  • API access decides what can be automated and refreshed.
  • Definitions decide whether two teams are arguing about numbers or about strategy.

What this means in practice

You do not need to write production code. You do need to read a schema, understand what an API rate limit implies for a reporting job, and recognise when a discrepancy is a data problem rather than a performance problem.

The marketers who can move between the strategy conversation and the systems conversation are the ones whose recommendations survive scrutiny.
